About Me

Always tricky these things... if asked what I tend to photograph I say 'anything that falls under the lens'.  This is largely because lack of time forces me to look for images wherever I happen to be.

If pushed - then my interests really lie (at present anyway) in people. So I'm keen on portraiture - location mainly, social documentary, photo-ethnography, social comment. These are all genres that link to my training as a social scientist.

Further than that I love monochrome, film-grain the size of golf-balls and I find myself constantly drawn to those east European photographers who documented life the other side of the 'Curtain' in the 60s and 70s. They probably used Orwo or Efke film - hence my draw towards large grain. Eastern Europe is an academic and personal interest of mine - and the way these photographers captured the bitter-sweet nature of life in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia et al indicates a particular sensitivity towards the human condition. I've noticed similar traits in Russian work today - so maybe it's a cultural thing!

I may update this as it's almost a stream of consciousness...
